Flea Market in Wax is an exploration of the ubiquitous invisible objects that populate our environments, the objects of discarded culture that help define the Anthropocene. The constant influx of new things leads to collective oblivion. Our environment is filled with the remnants of objects that once had meaning and function. Flea Market in Wax consists of the repurposing and sale of objects found in collections of discarded objects that have been ‘rescued’ from their ultimate fate, the landfill. Drawn from local sources, the items chosen embody both the wonderful and beautiful creations of society’s ingenuity and prosperity, and the disturbing and terrifying effects of the ecological costs of resource depletion and overproduction. So that the objects can be reintroduced to the market or re-presented, they are draped with a thin layer of beeswax to preserve and enhance the form. The wax makes it possible to sublimate the object by masking its obsolescence and its reject characteristics, and in some cases, its original function(s).

Items priced:  $5 section or $10 section. Discounts for bulk purchases! All proceeds are donated to Le comptoir Emmaüs, who provided most of the items for the Market.

The École expérimentale is a living laboratory for collective ideation by artists, thinkers and cultural practitioners created by Œil de Piosson (Quebec City). This research project follows in the footsteps of the long tradition of artists’ schools, as much as in relation to current developments in curatorial practices geared towards research-creation. The school takes the form of a short, intensive 5-day programme aimed at developing an alternative, collective and artistic knowledge base through workshops, excursions, discussions, interventions, installations, lectures and performances. It is inspired by the principles of the popular university and is in keeping with the public space, reflecting various contemporary issues. This project is being carried out in partnership with the Maison pour la danse, which will be hosting the École expérimentale from October 30 to November 3. To find out more, click here
